Solar Power for Garage and Shop
Garage and shop backup that survives compressors and saws. Start with continuous and surge math, then pick inverter + 48V storage instead of another outlet box. Who this is for
DIY garage shops that run compressors, welders, saws, and servers — and want backup that feels like real split-phase power, not a camping brick.
Recommended stack
- Inverter: Shop-grade off-grid / backup inverter. See inverters and power station vs garage stack.
- Battery: 48V bank with room to grow. See batteries and WallMount vs rack.
- Protection: MidNite SPD and soft starters for inductive loads. See tools & accessories.
FAQ
Do I need a soft starter?
Large inductive loads (compressors, pumps) often behave better with soft start — fewer inverter trips and less flicker.
Is a 2kWh station enough for a shop?
Usually no for continuous tools. Stations are great for lights and laptops; shops need inverter + battery capacity.
What usually trips garage systems
Table saws, compressors, welders, and dust collectors surge hard. A power station that looks fine on paper can brown out the second the compressor kicks. That is why garage shops often graduate to an inverter + 48V LiFePO4 bank with soft starters on the worst motors. Read power station vs inverter + battery before you buy another portable box.
Plan continuous watts for tools you run together, not just one tool at a time. Use the inverter sizing guide, then protect PV and AC paths with MidNite-class SPD and proper cable—see protect an EG4 12000XP and tools & accessories.
Shop layout tip
Keep battery and inverter wall space planned before you hang racks. WallMount packs simplify aesthetics; server racks grow capacity in a cabinet. Compare both on WallMount vs server rack, then shop batteries and inverters.
